Hungrrr vs Flipdish: Which Restaurant Ordering Platform Is Better?

Which platform is better: Hungrrr or Flipdish?

For most restaurants, Flipdish. Hungrrr does branded apps and ordering websites. Flipdish does those too, and then adds POS, kiosks, kitchen screens, AI phone ordering and marketing tools on top. If you want one supplier running the whole operation, that's what decides it.

It isn't automatic, though. A takeaway with a till it's happy with and one problem to fix - too many orders going through Just Eat - might do fine on Hungrrr. It depends on what you're trying to sort out now and what you'll want the business to look like in a couple of years.

What is Hungrrr?

Hungrrr is a UK online ordering platform for restaurants and takeaways. You get:

  • Branded mobile apps for iOS and Android
  • A restaurant website with online ordering
  • Push notifications for marketing
  • Integration with some third-party delivery services

It's aimed at independents and small groups who want more of their orders coming in direct, instead of through the marketplaces.

What is Flipdish?

Flipdish is restaurant technology used by thousands of restaurants in the UK, Ireland and further afield. It covers:

The point is that all of it comes from one supplier. That suits multi-location groups and franchises, but plenty of single sites run it the same way.

Online ordering

Both give you branded online ordering. Customers order from you directly, and you don't pay marketplace commission on those orders.

The difference is where the order ends up. With Flipdish, an order placed on your website or app goes straight into the POS and shows up on the same kitchen screen as the counter orders. No extra tablet on the pass. The customer's order history gets saved as well, and that's what the marketing and loyalty tools work from later.

Hungrrr doesn't have its own POS. Orders usually come in through a standalone interface, or you set up an integration with whatever system you already run. On a quiet Tuesday that's fine. On a Friday night with the phone going, a queue at the counter and a tablet beeping in the corner, it's one more screen somebody has to keep an eye on.

If you already have a POS from another supplier and don't want to change it, Hungrrr can sit next to it well enough. If you're starting from scratch, or replacing your setup anyway, Flipdish joins things up better.

Branded apps

Both platforms build branded apps. Customers download an app with your name and logo on it, not Hungrrr's or Flipdish's.

Flipdish branded mobile apps run off the same backend as everything else - customer data, loyalty and AI marketing campaigns. When someone orders through your app, that data is yours, and you can actually do things with it. Send a push notification to one group of customers. Send an offer to people who haven't ordered in six weeks. Run a loyalty scheme.

Hungrrr apps have push notifications too, and they do help with repeat orders. The catch is that without a POS on the same platform, the customer data stays inside the ordering system. Someone who orders through the app on Monday and pays at the counter on Thursday can look like two different customers, and you can't do much with half a picture.

POS and operations

This is the biggest gap between the two.

Flipdish's restaurant POS is built for hospitality. It handles dine-in, counter, takeaway and delivery in one system, with order management, kitchen display screens, table management and hardware meant to survive a commercial kitchen.

Hungrrr doesn't offer a POS. So if you use Hungrrr for online ordering, you'll be running a separate POS next to it. Two systems means staff flicking between screens, someone reconciling the two at the end of the night, and orders occasionally getting missed.

A missed order isn't just the lost sale. It's the customer ringing back annoyed, the refund, and maybe the review. Menus are the other headache. When you run out of something mid-service, you want it off every channel at once. With two systems, unless the integration handles it for you, that's two places to update while you're also trying to cook.

If you do any real volume of dine-in or counter trade, this matters more than anything else in the table.

Multi-location and franchise capability

Lots of multi-location groups and franchises run on Flipdish. It gives you:

  • One menu managed centrally across all sites
  • Different prices and availability per location
  • Reporting at franchise level
  • Marketing that can target customers across every location, or just the ones near one site

Say you want to change the price of a meal deal across eight sites. On Flipdish you do it once. Without central menu management you're logging into each site, or ringing each manager and hoping they get round to it.

Hungrrr has limited tools for groups. It's a better fit for a single site or a very small group.

Past two or three locations, or if you're planning to get there, Flipdish is the one built for it.

AI and automation

Flipdish has put a lot into its restaurant AI platform. Two parts are worth knowing about.

The AI phone agent answers incoming calls and takes orders by itself. Chip shops, Indian restaurants, and pizza and chicken shops all get heavy phone traffic, and at peak somebody is either on the phone or cooking. Not both. A call that rings out is an order that went somewhere else. The phone agent picks those calls up, so the staff stay on the food.

Flipdish AI Marketing spots customers who look like they're drifting away and sends them win-back campaigns. It also finds upsell chances and times messages for when a customer is likely to order.

Hungrrr has push notifications, and they work. It doesn't have AI automation anywhere near this.

Who Hungrrr suits

Hungrrr makes sense for:

  • Independent restaurants and takeaways that want a branded app
  • Restaurants trying to rely less on Just Eat or Uber Eats
  • Operators who already have a POS they like and just want a direct ordering channel on top

If that's you, Hungrrr does the job. The problem is the ceiling. Once you want kiosks, a phone agent or a second site, you could find yourself switching platforms again. Switching isn't free: new hardware, retraining staff, rebuilding menus and getting regulars onto a new app.

Who Flipdish suits

Flipdish is built for:

  • Restaurants, takeaways, cafés and QSRs in the UK and Ireland
  • Multi-location groups that want central control but still need each site to run its own way
  • Operators who are fed up paying for and juggling five separate tools
  • Businesses that want AI marketing and phone ordering

It isn't only for groups. Plenty of independent restaurants use Flipdish as their first and only technology platform.

Pricing

Neither publishes standard pricing. Both give custom quotes based on how many locations you have, your order volume and the features you want.

Flipdish usually charges a monthly platform fee, plus hardware if you need POS or kiosk kit. Flipdish's online ordering pricing is a decent place to start.

Don't compare monthly fees on their own. Ask:

  • Is there commission on orders?
  • What do the integrations you need cost?
  • What will the hardware cost?
  • Will you need a separate POS from another supplier?

That last one catches people out. A platform that looks cheaper but needs a second system usually ends up costing more once you add it all up: two subscriptions, two support lines to ring when something breaks, two lots of hardware on the counter, and the staff time lost moving between them.

Questions to ask in the demo

Sales demos happen on a quiet screen with one test order. Your Friday night doesn't look like that. A few things to push on with either supplier:

  • Where exactly does an online order land in the kitchen, and what does the screen look like with twenty orders on it?
  • Who owns the customer data, and can you export it if you leave?
  • What happens to your app and your customers' accounts if you cancel?
  • How do you take an item off the menu across the website, app and counter at the same time?
  • When is support open? Restaurants trade evenings and weekends, so 9 to 5 support isn't much use.
  • If you have more than one site, can you see all of them from one login?

If an answer is vague, ask them to show you instead of telling you.

Flipdish vs Hungrrr: the verdict

It comes down to scope.

Hungrrr does one thing well: branded online ordering without marketplace commission. If that's genuinely all you need and the rest of your operation is sorted, it's a reasonable pick.

Flipdish does ordering, POS, kiosks, kitchen screens, AI marketing and phone ordering from one place, with one supplier to deal with. If you want to grow, or you're tired of running a separate system for every job, it's the better choice. For most restaurants comparing the two, you get a lot more for a similar cost.
